July 24, 2022 Seventh Sunday After Pentecost

My reading this week dovetails nicely.  Bishop Ken Carder articulates an excellent definition of the church:

The church exists as the community called to embody the presence of the risen Christ and through the Holy Spirit to continue the work of Christ in the World.  The uniqueness of the Christian community lies in its call to be ‘the body of Christ’ (1 Cor. 12:27), a visible sign and instrument of God’s presence and mission.  (Ministry with the Forgotten:  Dementia Through a Spiritual Lens, Ken Carder, p. 103)

Let’s think this week about what it means to be the body of Christ, not simply individually, but as a church—as a people united in our faith, and called together by God.  What is it we do as we come together each week to worship, and why is it that we think others should join us?  Why does it matter that we do it together?  In the world in which we currently live, people need a clearer reason than “that’s what you’re supposed to do”—which is true, but not terribly convincing.

I’d love to hear what you’re thinking.
