January 14, 2024 Second Sunday After the Epiphany

In the Statement of Faith of the United Church of Canada, found in our hymnal at #883, we read, “We are called to be the church:  to celebrate God’s presence, to love and serve others, to seek justice and resist evil, to proclaim Jesus, crucified and risen, our judge and our hope.”  Loving and serving is inextricably linked with seeking justice and resisting evil—and all of it is being the church.

And in our own World Methodist Social Affirmation, found in our hymnal at #886, we affirm these same principles: “We rejoice in every sign of God’s kingdom:  in the upholding of love, justice, and reconciliation; in each act of self-giving on behalf of others; in the abundance of God’s gifts entrusted to us that all may have enough; in all responsible use of the earth’s resources.”  We can participate in God’s kingdom, or we can opt out—but only one is a truly biblical expression of faith.

So, this Monday, as we observe Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, maybe take a step outside of your usual routine.  Do something particular for justice and kindness, for God’s kingdom on earth as it is in heaven, being aware that your behavior is part of your faith.

I’ll see you in church, where we can celebrate our God and be the church together—

 Prayer

Living and loving God, as we think of some of our faith heroes, we are humbled by all that they accomplished.  Remind us that it is the participation of many that makes a movement, and that it takes many “ordinary” people to make a change.  Help us to maintain an awareness of the world around us, and to participate in your kingdom every day.  Orient us toward the needs around us, and help us to offer the grace to others that we would want if our situations were reversed.  As you have moved toward us in love, so lead us to be present in love in the world.  Amen.
