June 9, 2024 Third Sunday After Pentecost

The root of “ordinary” in this case is actually “ordinal,” as in counting numbers, but “ordinary” in the modern sense applies as well.  And it’s a good reminder that all of our days are holy—that God is with us through those as well as the “big” days of our lives and of the church calendar.  Jesus lived some ordinary days as well, as Dr. Bass points out, and had walks and meals and teaching along the way—which is a helpful reminder to us here and now that these times also matter, not just church days, and not just holidays.

So as you walk this ordinary week and come to church this ordinary Sunday, remember that this is holy, too—and throughout all of it, as John Wesley said, “best of all, God is with us.”  Thanks be to God.

Prayer

Holy and hope-giving God, we thank you for your continual presence with us.  In a world with so many distractions, you continue to find ways to get our attention.  We give thanks for these weeks of summer, for the memories of good summer days and for the potential for so many more.  We thank you for barbecues and sunshine, for long days and cool nights.  Give us the wisdom to treasure our days—to count our days aright.  Help us to share them with you, and give thanks.  Amen.
